Today in “America is not a serious country”: In this report about AI, they’re displaying the logos of differerent companies in the space, including France’s/Europe’s Le Chat from Mistral, however instead of the proper logo… they used the logo of a laundry detergent
Tough one today
What a great opener:
The world can no longer trust American tech. If that sounds dramatic, take a step back and consider the facts.
The United States is a nation in the thrall of authoritarianism, owned and operated almost completely by a far-right doomsday cult intent on betraying every alliance, every contract, every promise it has ever made (…) its decision-making is either erratic and illogical or dictated by interests that cannot and will not align with any reasonable principles of freedom, social progress, or ethical governance.
Todayβs edition of Connections: Sports Edition took about 10 seconds πͺ

It is no longer safe to move our governments and societies to US clouds
Written down like this, it seems pretty bizarre, and thatβs because it is. Itβs also not easy to realize that our relationship with America is over after 80 years. It took time for me as well to accept that.
But it really is over. (β¦) The US has dismantled the official privacy framework. The deal is dead.
So stop surrendering our society to America. Have the courage to use different software and services. Even if it takes some getting used to.

Absolutely stoked to read a story on my old neighborhood basketball court in the New York Times (by way of The Athletic)
I used to play about 1.5 to 2 hours there every Sunday mornings back when we used to live in Montmartre/Pigalle!

Absolute insanity from the US, unsurprisingly:
This executive order instructs federal employees of the federal government to ignore Supreme Court rulings and congressional actions if the President or Attorney General tell them to.

A cool concept let down by a final act that went a bit too fast in terms of pacing in contrast with the exposition of the beginning of the movie.

Following up on the previous post:
More and more, the notion of the classic American breakfastβbacon, eggs, toast, milk, coffee, and a glass of orange juiceβis beginning to seem like a snapshot of a bygone era. Not only is the supply of orange juice becoming shaky, but so is that of eggs, milk, and coffee (not to mention other goods, such as chocolate and olive oil). None of this means that weβll have to go without these foods anytime soon. But for everyday Americans, it will likely mean having less.
Itβs hard not to look at this with a cynical βthe writing has been on the wall, and you could have done something to prevent it but now all you can do is prepare yourselves for a different world youβll have to adapt to because youβve acted so unreasonably for so long as a country β and to some extent for at least 2 generations.β

Imported fruit can be costly, and its flavor varies because of differences in variety, growing conditions, and taste preferences. (European oranges skew tart because locals like their juice sour, while American varieties cater to the nationβs sweet tooth.)

Meta employees have no scruples surrounding the privacy of internal communications because, by definition, theyβre the sort of people who never saw any problem with Metaβs complete lack of regard for such things. So they donβt hesitate to leak what they donβt like. Zuck gets no loyalty because he hired an entire company of people with no convictions other than βwinningβ or whatever it really is that Meta sees as its central tenet.
